Louis Stettner (1922-2016), né à Brooklyn, a créé des milliers d’images au cours de sa carrière qui s’est étalée sur près de quatre-vingts ans. Ayant acquis son premier appareil photo alors qu’il était adolescent, il s’est rapidement fait un nom à la célèbre Photo League de New York, où il a noué des amitiés avec Sid Grossman et Weegee. Il a servi comme photographe de combat pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, et l’expérience de la lutte contre le fascisme lui a laissé une croyance durable dans l’humanité fondamentale de l’homme ordinaire. Après la guerre, Stettner arrive à Paris en 1947 où il reste cinq ans. Pendant cette période, il a tissé une relation durable avec Brassaï, la ville et ses habitants.
Le travail de Stettner défie toute catégorisation, il contient des éléments à la fois de l’esthétique de la photographie de rue new-yorkaise et de l’humanisme lyrique de la tradition française. Marxiste de toute sa vie, Stettner a célébré la classe ouvrière et s’est inspiré de sa lecture de Walt Whitman et de l’humanité intérieure qui l’a constamment attiré dans la vie des hommes et des femmes ordinaires. Malgré sa diversité, le travail de Stettner est cohérent sur le plan thématique : il cherche la beauté dans les gens ordinaires et leur vie quotidienne.
Cette monographie, qui accompagne la plus grande rétrospective de l’œuvre de Stettner à ce jour, donne enfin à son travail la reconnaissance qu’il mérite. Les essais de David Campany, James Iffland, Karl Orend et Sally Martin Katz chronologiquement retracent l’œuvre de Stettner depuis ses débuts à New York et à Paris, jusqu’à son utilisation ultérieure de la photographie en couleur, et ses dernières méditations sur le paysage des Alpilles. Présentant plus de 150 photographies couvrant toute sa carrière, le livre comprend également des images inédites et certaines de ses œuvres en couleurs jusqu’alors presque inconnues, ainsi qu’une sélection d’écrits de Stettner ; textes de Sally Martin Katz, David Campany, Karl Orend et James Iffland, photos en n.b. et en couleurs.
Brooklyn-born Louis Stettner (1922–2016) created thousands of images over the course of a career that spanned almost eighty years. Acquiring his first camera as a young teenager, he quickly made a name for himself at New York’s famous Photo League, where he formed friendships with Sid Grossman and Weegee. He served as a combat photographer in World War II, and the experience of fighting fascism left him with a lasting belief in the fundamental humanity of the common man. After the war, Stettner arrived in Paris in 1947, where he stayed for five years. During this time, he forged a lasting relationship with Brassaï, the city and its people.
Stettner’s work defies categorization, containing elements of both the New York street photography aesthetic and the lyrical humanism of the French tradition. A lifelong Marxist, Stettner celebrated the working class and was inspired by his reading of Walt Whitman and the inner humanity that constantly drew him to the lives of ordinary men and women. For all its diversity, however, Stettner’s work is thematically consistent: he sought out beauty in common people and their everyday life.
Accompanying the largest retrospective on Stettner’s work to date, this substantial monograph at last gives his work the recognition it deserves. Essays by David Campany, James Iffland, Karl Orend and Sally Martin Katz chart Stettner’s work chronologically from his early days in New York and Paris, through to his later use of colour photography, to his final meditations on the landscape of Les Alpilles. Showcasing more than 150 photographs spanning his entire career, the book also includes previously unpublished images and some of his hitherto almost unknown colour work, as well as a selection of Stettner’s writings.
