C’est avant tout une ode à l’amitié. Une amitié forgée il y a des années entre plusieurs garçons vivant à la campagne autour du petit village de Hoegaarden, en Belgique. La loyauté et l’esprit impitoyable de leur camaraderie, ainsi que les paysages pittoresques de plaines et de criques qu’ils étaient libres de parcourir et d’explorer, ont fourni la toile de fond idéale pour que Seppe Vancraywinkel (Belge) devienne le jeune romantique qu’il est aujourd’hui.
En vieillissant, Vancraywinkel s’imagine, avec ses amis, se mouvoir dans une bulle qui prend forme chaque fois qu’ils sont ensemble. Dans leur unité, il trouve réconfort et refuge, car la bulle est imperméable au bruit exigeant du monde extérieur.
Le travail de Vancraywinkel Within the Bubble of Surroundings, qui dure depuis un an, vise à documenter des moments spontanés dans lesquels des traces visuelles et affectives de la bulle peuvent être discernées. La sélection offre un aperçu d’une amitié évolutive mais solide dans laquelle les notions de temps, d’espace, d’âge adulte, de masculinité et d’intimité sont spontanément et intuitivement reconfigurées de manière ludique.
First and foremost, this is an ode to friendship. A friendship forged years ago between several boys living in the countryside surrounding the small village of Hoegaarden, Belgium. The loyalty and unwithering spirit of their camaraderie, as well as the picturesque scenery of plains and creeks that they were free to roam and explore, provided the ideal backdrop for Seppe Vancraywinkel (BE) to grow into the young romantic he is today.
As they have grown older and now left the place that once connected them in search of new ventures, Vancraywinkel imagines himself and his friends as moving through life inside a bubble that assumes form whenever they are together. In their togetherness he finds solace and refuge, for the bubble is impervious to demanding noise from the outside world.
Vancraywinkel’s year-long work Within the Bubble of Surroundings aims to document spontaneous moments in which both visual and affective traces of the bubble can be discerned. The selection offers insight into an evolving yet solid friendship in which notions of time, space, adulthood, masculinity, and intimacy are spontaneously and intuitively reconfigured in a playful manner.
