Les images ont toutes été prises en 1978–1979 sur l’île de Hokkaido située dans la partie nord du Japon. La région de Hokkaido a capturé l’imagination de Moriyama en tant que jeune homme encore à l’école. Les voyages à travers le Japon étaient interdits au lendemain de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, et pour le jeune Moriyama, l’île avait un attrait exotique. Tout au long des années 1960, il a visité Hokkaido pour prendre des photos, mais ce n’est qu’en 1978, lors d’un séjour de trois mois, qu’il a commencé à photographier compulsivement l’île. Au cours de cette période, il a travaillé sur 250 rouleaux de film, soit près de 2000 photographies. Les négatifs ont ensuite été laissés intacts jusqu’en 2008, date à laquelle Moriyama a commencé à les développer et à les éditer, ce qui a abouti à la publication du livre photo Hokkaido en 2008, suivie par la série multi-volume Northern ; des plaques noires et blanches à fond perdu tout au long, Il a été magnifiquement imprimé sur papier couché lourd au Japon par Daishinsha, sous la direction de Tsunehiko Shinki et Akio Kobayashi, édité par Yutaka Kambayashi et Michitaka Ota.

The images were all taken in 1978–9 on the island of Hokkaido located in the northern part of Japan. The region of Hokkaido captured Moriyama’s imagination as a young man still at school. Travel across Japan was prohibited in the aftermath of the Second World War, and for the young Moriyama the island had an exotic appeal. Throughout the 1960s he visited Hokkaido to take photographs, however it wasn’t until 1978, during a three-month stay, that he began to compulsively photograph the island. Over this period he worked through 250 rolls of film, amounting to almost 2000 photographs. The negatives were then left untouched until 2008, at which point Moriyama began to develop and edit them, resulting in the publication of the photobook Hokkaido in 2008, followed by the multi-volume series Northern ; full-bleed black-and-white plates throughout, beautifully printed on heavy coated paper in Japan by Daishinsha, under the direction of Tsunehiko Shinki and Akio Kobayashi, edited by Yutaka Kambayashi and Michitaka Ota.
