Lorsque JUDITH BLACK a déménagé à Cambridge, au Massachusetts, en 1979, avec ses quatre enfants, une amie lui a demandé si tout allait bien se passer. Franchement, elle ne le savait pas.
Ils venaient d’emménager dans un appartement délabré dans un quartier que l’agente immobilière a reconnu être dans l’état tel qu’ils allaient le trouver. Chez le petit épicier du coin, il y avait « fuck you » peint sur un panneau – un accueil moins qu’encourageant pour une famille qui avait grandi dans la maison hippie dans une atmosphère bucolique qu’ils partageaient avec les frères et sœurs de Judith Black dans le New Hampshire. Les choses ne semblaient pas très prometteuses pour une mère seule avec peu de revenus et une maison pleine de jeunes enfants.
Au cours des deux décennies suivantes, Judith Black réalisera une série d’images qui raconteront la vie de ses jeunes enfants et sa relation avec eux.

When JUDITH BLACK moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1979 with her four children, a friend asked her if they were going to be all right there. Frankly, she didn’t know.
They had just moved into a dilapidated apartment in a neighborhood that the real estate lady admitted was as good as they were going to find. The small convenience store down the block had “fuck you” fiercely spray painted on the clapboard – a less than encouraging welcome for a family that had grown up in the bucolic hippie house they shared with Black’s siblings in New Hampshire. Things didn’t seem very promising for a single mother with little income and a houseful of young children.
Over the the next two decades, Black would make a series of images that chronicled the lives of her young children, and her relationship with them.
