« En septembre 2012, j’ai traversé l’océan et me suis retrouvé dans une terre inconnue. Laissant derrière moi ma famille, mes amis et le confort de mon foyer, j’ai quitté Singapour pour entamer une nouvelle vie au Royaume-Uni. Ce fut pour moi une période de grande croissance personnelle, alors que je m’efforçais de m’intégrer dans une culture étrangère et de trouver ma place dans le monde.
Cette série utilise l’anonymat, la géométrie et le langage visuel formel de ma photographie de rue pour évoquer le sentiment de dépaysement et d’incertitude que j’ai ressenti durant cette période.
Le titre Journey to the West s’inspire d’un mythe chinois de la dynastie Ming relatant le voyage du moine bouddhiste Xuanzang vers les “régions occidentales” afin d’obtenir des textes sacrés bouddhistes (sutras). »

« In September 2012, I drifted across the ocean and found myself in an unfamiliar land. Leaving behind family, friends, and the comfort of home, I left Singapore and embarked on a new life in the UK. For me, it was a time of great personal growth, as I set about to integrate into a foreign culture and find my place in the world.
This series uses the anonymity, geometry, and formal visual language of my street photography to evoke the sense of dislocation and uncertainty I felt over this period.
The title ‘Journey to the West’ comes from a Ming dynasty Chinese myth about the journey of the Buddhist monk Xuanzang who travelled to the ‘Western Regions’ to obtain Buddhist sacred texts (sutras). » – Wei Jian Chan
