Michael Wolf est mondialement connu pour son travail consacré à la « vie dans les villes », et plusieurs de ses séries les plus importantes ont déjà été publiées en livres : Tokyo Compression, Hong Kong Inside Outside, A Series of Unfortunate Events, pour n’en citer que quelques-unes.
Voici maintenant Bottrop-Ebel 76, qui raconte une tout autre histoire. Étudiant, Michael Wolf a réalisé cette série en 1976 dans un petit village minier de la région de la Ruhr, en Allemagne, et l’a présentée comme travail d’examen à son professeur Otto Steinert à la Folkwangschule d’Essen. À l’époque, il s’agissait d’une documentation sociale classique, organisée par catégories telles que « types de bâtiments », « population active », « jeunes » ou encore « fêtes et associations ». Aujourd’hui, avec le recul de plus de trente-cinq ans, le travail a été soigneusement réexaminé et recomposé pour le livre de manière beaucoup plus libre.
Le regard curieux et empreint de compassion de Michael Wolf se concentre sur le milieu et touche droit au cœur. Qu’il s’agisse d’une petite fille lors de son premier jour d’école, réprimandée par son père parce qu’elle ne pose pas comme le photographe le souhaite ; d’adolescents qui enfourchent leurs vélos pour se rendre en périphérie, boire de la bière et tenter leurs premiers rapprochements avec l’autre sexe ; d’un groupe de personnes en habits du dimanche buvant de l’alcool dans la rue avant que le bus ne les emmène en excursion ; ou encore d’un couple âgé, en vêtements ordinaires et pantoufles, dansant un dernier et mélancolique slow au bistrot — l’intensité émotionnelle, presque physiquement perceptible, coupe le souffle.
L’ouvrage comprend plus de 100 pages de photographies ainsi qu’un épilogue de Sigrid Schneider ; photos en n.b. et quelques unes en couleurs.

And now ›Bottrop-Ebel 76‹ which is quite a different story. As a student Michael Wolf has photographed the series in 1976 in the small coal-mining village in the Ruhr-District, Germany and submitted it for the exam to his teacher Otto Steinert at the Folkwangschule in Essen – at that time as a classical social documentation sorted by categories such as ›building types‹, ›working population‹, ›youngsters‹ or ›festivities and associations‹. Now with the distance of more than 35 years the work has been looked through carefully again and put together for the book in a much more free manner.
Michael Wolf´s curious, compassionate look aims at the milieu and hits right into the heart. When a little girl on her first school day is told off by her father because she does not pose as requested for the photographer, when teens drive their bikes to the outskirts to drink beer and to try out the approach to the other gender, when a group of people in their Sunday clothes drink booze on the street before the bus picks them up for a joyride or when an old couple in everyday clothes and slippers dances a last melancholic waltz in the pub, the physically perceptible emotional intensity just takes my breath away.
›Bottrop-Ebel 76‹ is a magnificent study about the typical Ruhr District milieu at times of the already starting structural change. But at the same time and more than that it is an epic about life itself which makes comprehensible how people of different generations – alone and in community – struggle, worry and care.
